At just 25 years old, Matthew Houser of Bristol, Virginia, faced a terrifying reality: he weighed over 800 pounds and doctors told him he had only six months left to live if he didn’t make drastic changes. “I was basically on my deathbed,” Matthew told News 5. “I figured, well, this is it. Might as well start planning my funeral.”
Though he had been hospitalized multiple times due to his weight, this visit was different. His oxygen levels were dangerously low, and the prognosis was grim. It was a wake-up call that made him realize he had to take control of his life.

Matthew had struggled with obesity since childhood and battled anxiety and depression. “When I was growing up in school, I got bullied a lot and didn’t have many friends,” he explained. “My friends were basically food and TV.” But faced with the possibility of dying so young, he knew it was time to make a serious change.
The path to transformation was not easy. At first, he could barely get out of bed. Determined to fight for his life, he began by lifting canned foods to build strength and gradually cut out sodas and sugary drinks. He tracked every bite, slowly becoming more active and eventually training regularly at the gym. Three years later, Matthew had lost over 600 pounds.
Today, he maintains a strict routine, exercising six days a week for at least two hours and keeping a detailed food journal. His transformation has been both physical and emotional. Matthew says he now feels confident, enjoys meeting new people, and no longer fears eye contact.

He shares his story to inspire others struggling with obesity, emphasizing that success requires determination, consistency, and finding any opportunity to move, even if it’s just walking to the mailbox. “It’s going to be hard, but you can do it,” he says. For Matthew, the struggle was worth it — proving that choosing to fight for your life can truly change everything.
