That day, a man found a small, injured gorilla in the middle of the forest. She was lying on the wet grass, barely breathing, with a deep wound on her leg. He couldn’t leave her unattended: he carefully wrapped her in his coat and carried her home.
For weeks, he cared for her devotedly. He changed her bandages, bottle-fed her, warmed her by the fire, and spoke to her tenderly, as if she were his own daughter.
The gorilla, initially trembling with fear, began to trust him. Over the course of several months, she grew into a strong animal with a deep gaze and a surprisingly kind disposition. An unbreakable bond developed between them.
But the law was clear: keeping a wild animal in the home was prohibited. One day, neighbors saw a huge gorilla through their window and alerted the authorities.
The next day, animal control officers arrived. The manfully tear begged them not to take her, assuring them she wouldn’t harm anyone. But the decision had already been made.
The gorilla was relocated, leaving the man alone in the empty house. For several days, he sat in front of the empty cage, stroking the old rope he used to play with, tears streaming down his face.
Years passed. The gorilla was taken to a zoo, where she quickly adapted. Keepers were amazed by her intelligence and calm: she never showed aggression, only a deep curiosity about people, as if she were searching for someone.
Meanwhile, the man was diagnosed with brain cancer. Doctors gave him only a few weeks to live. He could barely speak or walk, but one thought kept him going: he wanted to see his friend one last time.
The story touched the entire community, and the zoo agreed to fulfill his final wish.
On the day of their meeting, the old man was carried in on a stretcher, wrapped in a blanket. He was barely breathing, but a slight smile played on his lips. The workers opened the door of his enclosure and carefully led him closer. The gorilla sat with his back to them, calm and collected.
Hearing a soft cough, she turned her head. She stood motionless for a few seconds, watching him as if she couldn’t believe her eyes. Then she walked slowly towards him, step by step, until everyone held their breath.
The keepers were prepared for any reaction: many years had passed, and no one knew whether the animal remembered him.
And then the unthinkable happened. The gorilla knelt down next to the stretcher, sniffed his hand, made a deep, booming sound… and hugged him.
She held him gently, not squeezing, as if afraid to hurt him. Her eyes shone, her breathing quickened, and a soft sound, almost a scream, escaped her throat.
The man raised his hand and stroked her head. He smiled faintly.
No one could hold back their tears. The gorilla stood nearby, swaying slowly and making soft sounds, as if speaking to him in his native language.
After a few minutes, the old man closed his eyes and his breathing stopped.
The gorilla didn’t move. She stood silently, watching her friend. Only when he was finally led away did she allow them to approach, looking at them with sadness, as if realizing she had just lost the only person who had ever loved her as an equal.
