A woman who just set the world record for the largest afro says the achievement is more than a title — it’s a celebration of identity and natural beauty.

Jessica L. Martinez, whose afro spans over 6 feet in circumference (11.42 inches high and 12.2 inches wide), has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records as having the largest afro on a living woman. For her, the milestone sends a powerful message.

“Earning this record proves what I’ve always believed — our differences are worth honoring,” the 29-year-old tells PEOPLE. “Natural hair isn’t a trend. It’s a lifestyle.”

Martinez, a justice advocate and founder of Somebody’s Auntie, describes her connection with her hair as a lifelong friendship — one with highs, lows, and a lot of growth. “My hair and I have been through everything together. At the end of the day, it’s just the two of us getting ready for whatever comes next.”

But the journey wasn’t always easy. For years, she struggled with comparison and pressure to fit in. “I kept trying to force my hair to look like everyone else’s. Letting go of that changed everything. When I stopped fighting it, I found a kind of freedom I didn’t know I needed.”

With that shift came peace. Ignoring stares, comments, and expectations allowed her to redefine beauty, self-care, and what natural hair truly means.

Her award was presented by the previous record holder, Aevin Dugas — a moment Martinez describes as deeply meaningful. “She opened the door for others like me. Sharing this moment with her felt like passing a torch.”

Martinez hopes her record inspires people to dream boldly and treat their hair with patience and kindness. Her message for young girls struggling with their curls is simple: “You are enough. You are beautifully made. Never hide your hair — I’m not hiding mine.”

She plans to use this new visibility to continue advocating for natural hair and fighting against hair discrimination worldwide.
