Pregnancy and childbirth can be filled with anxiety, and every parent prays for the same outcome — a healthy baby who arrives safely. But for one young mother, the moment that should have been joyful became devastating when her newborn son entered the world with life-threatening medical complications.
Lisa Hough shared an emotional photo of her newborn grandson, Karson, born to her daughter Chelsea, along with the heartbreaking decision her daughter was forced to make. Karson’s arrival was far from ordinary. According to Lisa, he was born with two extremely rare, unrelated medical conditions. He suffered a hemorrhage in the left temporal lobe of his brain and was diagnosed with Non-ketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH), a rare genetic metabolic disorder.
Doctors explained that the severity of his condition meant he would likely remain significantly neurologically impaired — functioning at the developmental level of a 2- to 3-month-old for his entire life. Faced with unimaginable odds and grim medical predictions, Chelsea made the painful choice to remove her son from life support.

Family members gathered to say their final goodbyes. Medical staff warned them that once the ventilator was removed, Karson would not breathe on his own and that his heart would stop within minutes.
But then something extraordinary happened.
Lisa wrote that “God had other plans.” The moment the ventilator was withdrawn, Karson began breathing independently. His heart rate and oxygen levels stabilized. Hours passed, and he continued to fight — doing things doctors insisted would never be possible.
He breathed without assistance.
He swallowed on his own.
He even opened his eyes.
His medical team had no scientific explanation, calling his survival a genuine miracle.
On March 1, the family received incredible news: Karson was strong enough to go home. Thousands who followed his journey online celebrated the little boy who defied every expectation.
