Kevin Costner turned 70 on January 18, and he celebrated the milestone by posting a nostalgic photo from his early years on Instagram. The black-and-white snapshot shows a young Costner dressed head-to-toe in cowboy gear.
“Thank you all for the birthday wishes,” he wrote in the caption. Gesturing to the throwback image, he added, “This is me, if you can believe it. I’ve been living the cowboy life since I could barely walk — and I guess nothing has changed.”
He ended the post with a hopeful message: “Here’s to another year of chasing our dreams.”

A source close to the Oscar winner told PEOPLE ahead of his birthday that Costner is “doing well and enjoying life surrounded by family and friends.” They also noted that he isn’t currently dating anyone seriously and isn’t looking for a committed relationship right now.
The past year has been a major one for the star, with accomplishments on both the big and small screen. In June 2024, Costner confirmed his departure from Yellowstone before the release of season 5B. He also celebrated the release of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, a Western film he wrote, directed, and starred in.
The movie premiered on May 19 at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, earning a 10-minute standing ovation. Costner was visibly moved, wiping away a tear before delivering a speech in which he said the moment was something he would “never forget.”
Speaking with PEOPLE after the premiere, Costner reflected on his career: “I can honestly say I’ve had a wonderful life. I’ve taken some hits along the way, but I’m grateful — it’s been strange at times, yet incredibly beautiful.”

He also praised his seven children — Annie (40), Lily (38), Joe (36), Liam (28), Cayden (17), Hayes (15), and Grace (14) — calling them the “anchor” in his life. “They understand my passion for this work,” he said, “but they always come first.”
Laughing, he added, “They’re like shooting stars. My life is basically driving up and down the freeway making sure each one gets where they need to be — and that’s a responsibility I’m proud of.”
