Conjoined twins separated at age four are now thriving at 17 with one leg each and ‘feel like everyone else’
Kendra and Maliah Herrin, surgically separated at age four, became symbols of resilience after a 26-hour operation.😱
At birth, they shared a stomach, pelvis, liver, kidney, colon, and legs—a rare situation that required several years of deliberation before their parents, Erin and Jake, decided to separate them.
An unusual and risky surgery left both sisters with one leg, but gave them the chance to live longer and more independent lives. Today, despite scoliosis and other medical conditions, they live like normal teenagers.
“We feel like everyone else. We just have a few small differences,” they shared in an interview. Their daily lives are now filled with school, friends, and activities like dance and sports, despite using crutches and wheelchairs for mobility.
The girls started their YouTube channel three years ago, where they share their story and experiences. They also have an Instagram account and a blog where they spread positive messages and encourage acceptance.

“The best part about having only one foot is that we only have to paint one toe,” Kendra jokes. They adapted to the physical challenges with humor and great willpower.
The twins overcame significant medical obstacles, including a kidney transplant for Maliah, who experienced rejection of the organ she received from their mother. However, thanks to an anonymous donor, she received a new kidney at age 15.
“It hasn’t always been easy, but we have learned to embrace our differences with grace and courage,” they added.

Today, Maliah and Kendra are thriving in school and social life, surrounded by a loving and supportive family. “Everything is going really well at school, and we’ve never been bullied,” Maliah says, emphasizing their blessing of growing up in a supportive environment.
Despite sharing many experiences, the sisters have different personalities: Kendra is more extroverted, while Maliah is more withdrawn. But what units them is a desire to live life to the fullest and set an example of resilience.

They continue to prove to the world that despite beginning difficults, anything is possible with determination, family support and a positive attitude.
