A nine-year-old girl once mocked as “ugly” because of her appearance is now being called “beautiful” — and has found powerful confidence through football.

Maya was born with microphthalmia, a condition that prevented one of her eyes from developing normally, leaving it significantly smaller. Although she grew up in a loving home and had lived with the condition since birth, she still became the target of cruel comments and bullying from other children.

Determined to change her daughter’s experience, Maya’s mother, Lauren, committed herself to doing everything possible to give Maya a more typical appearance. When Maya was just three years old, she became the first child in the UK to undergo a groundbreaking series of procedures — including receiving a prosthetic eye made using fat taken from her abdomen.

Now nine years old, Maya has undergone 24 eye surgeries, each one leaving behind new stitches and scars. Even though she received her first prosthetic eye at only one year old, the weight of the device eventually altered her facial structure.

To improve her quality of life, Maya’s family is currently raising funds for a state-of-the-art bionic eye, working with the only specialist in the United States capable of creating one.

Lauren’s greatest hope is to give her daughter a childhood free from bullying, judgment, and isolation. And despite the challenges, Maya has blossomed — largely thanks to football.

Seeing her daughter’s growing interest in women’s football, Lauren enrolled her in the school team. What started as simple curiosity has become a source of strength. The sport has given Maya more than just a hobby — it has taught her skills, self-belief, and resilience that she carries into every part of her life.

Lauren says football has helped Maya discover her own worth and prove, both to herself and others, that girls are capable of extraordinary things. After all the hardship, watching her daughter run off the pitch beaming with pride is the greatest reward of all.
