Abandoned at birth because of a leg deformity, the young girl’s future seemed uncertain. The story begins in Irkutsk, where a 17-year-old mother, Natalia, and her 16-year-old partner, Oleg, faced the challenges of caring for a premature baby born without shins, ankles, or heels. With little experience and pressure from Natalia’s own mother, they reluctantly placed their daughter in an orphanage, hoping for a better life for her.
Jessica’s life changed when Stephen and Elizabeth Long, a devoted couple from the U.S., adopted her. They gave her a nurturing home filled with love and support. Despite having both legs amputated below the knee, Jessica thrived. She quickly adapted to her new life and discovered a talent for swimming while playing sports with her siblings. Recognizing her potential, her adoptive parents enrolled her in competitive programs alongside able-bodied children, giving her the chance to hone her skills.
Over the years, Jessica’s hard work and determination paid off. She earned a spot on the U.S. Paralympic team, making her debut at the Athens Games in 2004. Her stunning performance, winning three gold medals, captured the world’s attention. She solidified her status as a swimming superstar at the London Paralympics the following year.
