After Lung Cancer Diagnosis, Barry Manilow Explains Why He’s Skipping Chemo and Radiation

Music icon Barry Manilow has revealed that he has been diagnosed with lung cancer, prompting him to delay several tour dates while he prepares for treatment. Despite the diagnosis, the 82-year-old singer says he will not undergo chemotherapy or radiation.

The legendary performer—best known for classics like Mandy, Copacabana, and Somewhere Down the Road—shared that the cancer was discovered after months of lingering illness. In late December, Manilow explained that he had battled bronchitis for nearly six weeks, followed by another relapse lasting over a month.

“Even after I recovered and returned to the stage at the Westgate Las Vegas, my amazing doctor ordered an MRI just to be safe,” he wrote. That scan revealed a small cancerous spot on his left lung.

Manilow emphasized that the tumor was found very early, calling it a matter of “pure luck—and a great doctor.” Because physicians believe the cancer has not spread, his treatment plan will consist solely of surgical removal.

“No chemo. No radiation,” he assured fans. “Just surgery, chicken soup, and I Love Lucy reruns.”

Tour plans and positive updates

Manilow’s arena tour, originally scheduled for January 2026 across nine U.S. cities, has been moved to late February through April, with all tickets remaining valid. His Valentine’s weekend performances in Las Vegas—a venue he calls his “home away from home”—are still set to go ahead.

On January 2, Manilow posted an encouraging update on Instagram, sharing a smiling hospital selfie accompanied by the words, “Better today!”

Staying strong and optimistic

This is not the first time health concerns have interrupted Manilow’s career. In 2022, he tested positive for COVID-19 just before the opening night of his musical Harmony. Still, he remains determined to keep performing.

“I’m still strong, healthy, and I’ve got my voice,” Manilow has said. “As long as I can hit the notes, I’m not stopping.”

The singer has also been candid about his past smoking habit. He previously admitted to smoking for decades before quitting and later switching to vaping.

As news of his diagnosis spread, fans flooded social media with heartfelt messages of love and encouragement. Through it all, Barry Manilow continues to face this challenge with optimism, humor, and the same resilience that has defined his remarkable career.
