Daniel Stern, the actor forever associated with one of the most recognizable roles in holiday movie history, has found himself at the center of troubling legal headlines.
Stern, 66, rose to fame as Marv Merchants, the clumsy half of the “Wet Bandits,” in the 1990 smash hit Home Alone, starring opposite Joe Pesci. His exaggerated physical comedy helped make the film a seasonal classic, and he reprised the role two years later in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, further cementing his place in pop culture.
One of Marv’s most unforgettable scenes involved a tarantula placed on his face, prompting a scream that Stern later revealed was inspired by the famous shower scene in Psycho. Decades later, that moment was revisited in an unexpected way when Stern created a bronze sculpture of himself — complete with the spider — for the current owners of the iconic Home Alone house in Illinois. The actor joked that he made his sculpted likeness “much more handsome” than reality, calling the project a heartfelt tribute to a film that continues to resonate with fans.
After gradually stepping away from acting, Stern built a quieter life far from Hollywood. He and his wife, Laure Mattos, whom he married in 1980, run a cattle and citrus ranch in Ventura County, California. In recent years, Stern has also pursued sculpture, often sharing glimpses of his artistic and rural lifestyle on social media.
That peaceful routine was disrupted in January 2025. On January 9, Stern was cited by authorities at a hotel in Camarillo, California, and later released, according to law enforcement officials. The incident was forwarded to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office for review.
Just days later, on January 12, Stern was formally charged with a misdemeanor count of soliciting prostitution. He was scheduled to be arraigned the following day. Under California law, the charge carries potential penalties of up to six months in jail or a fine of up to $1,000.
Stern has not publicly commented on the allegations. As the case moves forward, the situation represents a stark and unexpected contrast to the lighthearted, slapstick image that once defined his career.
