A toddler’s unexpected response to her birthday cake has left her family—and the internet—laughing.
Carly Maddock, a 38-year-old mom, shared a now-viral TikTok capturing the moment her youngest daughter, Riley, reacted to her older sister taking a bite of her birthday cake. Riley, who turned one on January 7, was seated in her high chair as her 11-year-old sister, Madison, leaned in to show her how to eat the cake, encouraged by family members nearby.
But instead of following along, Riley suddenly froze, stared intensely at her sister, and then burst into tears. Maddock told PEOPLE that the family was completely caught off guard by the reaction.
@thecashdollars Omg did we accidentally create her villain origin story 😳 Somehow, our baby turns one today. Even though I’m convinced she was literally just born. Happy first birthday to our sweet youngest, who now has a cake complex. Your sister loves you the absolute most, and mama told her to take that bite 🤭 #firstbirthday #happybirthday #siblings #funnyvideos #sisters Smash cake that never got smashed from @Walmart ♬ original sound – Lauren Wisken
“She’s more into savory foods—especially meats—so we knew cake might not be her favorite,” Maddock explained. “But we definitely didn’t expect that response. I had just shown her how to taste it with her finger, so we thought she’d copy her sister.”
After filming ended, the family quickly comforted Riley and gave her another chance to try the cake. That attempt didn’t go any better.
“She still didn’t want it at all,” Maddock said. “But she bounced back quickly and was perfectly happy playing with her birthday presents.”
Despite the brief upset, Maddock emphasized that Riley and Madison share a close bond. The toddler often imitates her big sister, and the two are usually inseparable.

“They have the best relationship,” she said. “Riley copies Madison all the time in other ways.”
Although the cake smash didn’t go as planned, the family isn’t giving up. Maddock revealed that Madison—an enthusiastic baker and cake decorator—is already planning a second attempt.
“Madison is going to make her another cake later this month so Riley can try again,” she said. “And don’t worry—the sisters are back to being total besties.”
The clip has since gained millions of views online, something Maddock never expected.
“It was just meant to be a funny family moment,” she said. “Now it’s something we can all laugh about—and it’s been so fun seeing other parents share similar stories.”
