I was so overweight that even a gastric bypass failed — it took seven cruel words for me to lose 10st and drop seven dress sizes

Hayley Grice had spent years fighting her weight. After a decade of crash dieting and rebound gain, the now-48-year-old says her size-28 body made her feel “like a barrel.” Her health was suffering, her confidence was gone, and she avoided social situations out of shame.

But it was one vicious remark from a stranger that finally pushed her to change.

Hayley was visiting a garden centre with her husband and children when she overheard a comment that would stay with her forever.

“The kids were with us, and I was devastated,” she told The Sun. “I clearly heard someone say, ‘I can’t believe he would f*** her.’ It wasn’t whispered.”

While she knows the comment could have been directed at anyone, Hayley says she felt certain it was because of her weight. “We went straight home. I felt completely broken. I didn’t want to leave the house and I ended up on antidepressants.”

That moment pushed her to take drastic action — including gastric bypass surgery — but her journey to losing 10 stone and seven dress sizes was far from straightforward.

A lifelong battle

Hayley, a financial director from Wellington, Shropshire, says she was slim as a child but developed curves in her teens, reaching a size 14. By the time she met her husband Mark, now 55, she was a size 16 and weighed around 12 stone.

At 18, she dropped dramatically to a size 8 — but only through extreme restriction.

“I’d eat a plain jacket potato with tinned tomatoes, three Ryvitas and a cheese triangle,” she said. “I’d do that for weeks, then binge on anything I could find. It was a cycle of starving and binging.”

Once married and settled, the weight returned quickly. Weekend nights meant takeaway food and chocolate in front of films, and after having children, her weight continued to climb.

By the time her third daughter was born, Hayley was 22.5 stone and wearing a size 28. She later learned she also had an underactive thyroid, a condition that can cause weight gain, fatigue, and depression.

Ashamed of her size, Hayley stopped socialising — and her children suffered socially as a result. She recalls feeling excluded by other school mums and breaking down in tears after tripping on a kerb during a family holiday.

Surgery — and disappointment

At 32, with serious health issues including high cholesterol, iron deficiency, and chronic inflammation, Hayley paid £7,750 for a gastric bypass in 2009.

“I would have paid anything,” she said. “I was so excited.”

She dropped to 15 stone, but the weight loss was less than she’d hoped for — and the comments didn’t stop.

“Someone at boot camp said they’d never let themselves get as big as me,” she recalled. Exercise was uncomfortable, and excess skin caused physical and emotional distress.

She later paid £11,700 for a breast lift and skin removal. While the results helped, the weight slowly returned, and by 38 she was back up to 18 stone.

Private blood tests revealed insulin resistance and severe inflammation. “For the first time, I had proof that my body wasn’t working properly,” she said. “But there was still no solution.”

Finally, a turning point

Last year, weighing 17st 10lb, Hayley discovered Juniper weight-loss injections through Facebook. She began treatment in August 2024, paying £209 a month for six months.

The results were dramatic. She lost 13lb in the first month, and within seven months was down to 13st 3lb. In total, she has lost 5st 6lb in just over a year.

Now maintaining her weight with a lower dose costing £155 a month, Hayley says she’s happy to stay on the injections long-term if needed.

‘I feel like a different person’

Throughout everything, her husband Mark has been supportive. Today, Hayley says the change goes far beyond her appearance.

“I feel free,” she said. “I’m confident, I’ve changed my hair, and I finally wear the clothes I love.”

Even more importantly, her health has dramatically improved. Her cholesterol, inflammation, iron, and calcium levels have all returned to normal, and her thyroid condition remains stable with medication.

“My life used to revolve around whether I’d fit in the car or hide away because of my size,” she said. “On a recent holiday, I was cycling around Barbados. I honestly feel like a completely different person.”
