Original Geico Caveman Actor Opens Up – Can You Recognize Him?

Most viewers groan when ads interrupt their favorite shows or movies, yet some commercials manage to become unforgettable. While holiday campaigns like Coca-Cola’s New Year ads are widely anticipated, few commercials reach cult status the way Geico’s “Caveman” did. First airing in 2004, the ad featured a caveman and promoted car insurance. Geico reportedly spent around $600 million on advertising in 2006, and “The Caveman” quickly proved the investment worthwhile. Created by The Martin Agency, the campaign aimed to combine humor with a simple money-saving message, using comedy to engage audiences who typically tune out insurance ads.

Steve Bassett, the agency’s creative director, admitted they knew the commercial would succeed but never anticipated just how far it would spread.

Actor David Lehr auditioned for the role in 2004 without high expectations. “I thought, ‘Huh, okay.’ I didn’t think much about it. Went in, did it. They let me improvise,” he told Chicago Now. His improvisation helped him land the part, which he described as “fascinating and fun” while also paying the bills.

Once cast, Lehr’s caveman character became a pop culture sensation. “It’s the perfect job for someone like me, a character actor, because I make a lot of money on these commercials and nobody knows it’s me,” he told Interviewing Hollywood. “It fits my sense of humor—play it straight but it’s totally absurd, which is basically my style.”

Lehr was amazed by the attention the commercials generated. “I’m stunned… it’s huge! My wife recently googled GEICO caveman blogs—it’s unbelievable. There are so many people fascinated by these ads,” he added.

The role even landed him a unique moment at the Oscars. “They sent me in full caveman makeup with a model as my date. Every star wanted pictures with me—Gary Busey, Jon Voight, all of them. A gorgeous actress even tried to flirt with me. I had to tell her, ‘I’m not actually a caveman, and I’m married,’” Lehr recalled in a Forbes interview.

Today, Lehr runs his own production company, Howler Monkey Productions, and works as both an actor and producer. He is happily married to Jennifer Lehr, and together they have a son and a daughter.
