90s alt rock icon who tried to save Kurt Cobain is unrecognizable aged 66… can you guess who he is?

A legendary figure from the 1990s alternative rock scene was recently spotted looking almost unrecognizable while out in New York this week.

The musician, now 66, was part of one of the era’s most influential bands. He met his future bandmates in Atlanta in 1980, and together they all left college to chase a music career that quickly brought fame and critical success. The group stayed together for more than 30 years, even earning induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame before officially splitting.

Their frontman also shared a close friendship with Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, becoming godfather to their daughter, Frances Bean Cobain. He later wrote an emotional song inspired by his unsuccessful attempts to help Cobain through his personal struggles.

The man in question is Michael Stipe, iconic lead singer of R.E.M.

During his recent outing in Manhattan, Stipe sported a full white beard that dramatically changed his once clean-cut appearance. He wore a colorful look featuring a tie-dye jacket, yellow-and-white checked shirt, sky-blue beanie, and orange-tinted sunglasses.

Born into a military family in Georgia, Stipe was attending college when he met Peter Buck, Bill Berry, and Mike Mills. Their friendship led to the formation of R.E.M., and the band soon gained momentum after their debut single Radio Free Europe became a college radio favorite. Their first album, Murmur (1983), was both a critical and commercial success.

Stipe became known for his striking looks, emotional vocals, and famously cryptic lyrics. He once joked that fans spent years trying to decode words that sometimes were simply sounds with no clear meaning.

The band reached greater heights in the late 1980s and early 1990s with hits such as Losing My Religion, Everybody Hurts, The One I Love, and It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine).

Stipe was admired by many younger artists, including Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, who once called him his favorite lyricist. He also formed a close bond with Kurt Cobain before the Nirvana star’s death in 1994.

Following Cobain’s passing, Stipe wrote the song Let Me In, a deeply personal track reflecting his efforts to help his troubled friend.

After drummer Bill Berry left in 1997, the remaining members continued until R.E.M. amicably disbanded in 2011. Though they have reunited for occasional one-off performances, the band has repeatedly said they have no plans for a full comeback.

Stipe has remained connected to Cobain’s family over the years. In 2023, he officiated Frances Bean Cobain’s private wedding to Riley Hawk, son of skateboarding legend Tony Hawk.

As for his personal life, Stipe has spoken openly about being attracted to both men and women and has been in a long-term relationship with French photographer Thomas Dozol for more than a decade.
