An unforgettable ‘80s scream-queen stunner was recently spotted in Los Angeles looking almost unrecognizable — can you tell who it is?
Horror devotees were thrilled after catching a glimpse of the beloved cult legend, whose spooky-meets-sultry persona has captivated fans for decades.

Now 73, the actress — who first stepped into the spotlight as a Las Vegas showgirl — gave a subtle nod to her trademark gothic flair in a head-to-toe black outfit while arriving at LAX on Tuesday. Clad in a turtleneck, leggings, and a bucket hat, she still turned heads, though the look was worlds away from the daring, vampy image that made her famous as the sharp-tongued host of Movie Macabre, which premiered on KHJ-TV in Los Angeles back in 1981.

That unforgettable aesthetic — jet-black hair, porcelain complexion, plunging black gown, and dramatic eyeliner — took shape while she was studying improv at the legendary Groundlings Theatre in LA. Before becoming a pop culture phenomenon, she explored several paths, including fronting an Italian rock band and working as a Playboy Club hostess, before stepping into the role that would define her career: the Mistress of the Dark.
Recognize her yet?
If you guessed Cassandra Peterson — better known as Elvira — you nailed it.
Peterson’s career began as a Vegas showgirl and member of The Groundlings comedy troupe before she introduced the world to Elvira in 1981. Her breakout came with Elvira’s Movie Macabre on KHJ-TV, where her curve-hugging black dresses and razor-sharp, campy commentary on cult horror films quickly built a devoted fanbase.

She reached new heights of fame with the 1988 cult classic Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, which she co-wrote and starred in, cementing her status as a horror icon. She later headlined The Elvira Show and returned to the big screen in Elvira’s Haunted Hills, continuing to delight audiences with her signature spooky sass.

In 2021, she celebrated four decades of the character with the TV special Elvira’s 40th Anniversary, Very Scary, Very Special, Special, and that same year released her candid memoir, Yours Cruelly, Elvira.

In the book, Peterson opened up about her longtime relationship with her assistant, Teresa “T” Wierson. Though she had never dated women before, their bond deepened over the years after first meeting at a Hollywood gym. Following the end of Peterson’s marriage to Mark Pierson in 2003, the pair eventually became partners — a relationship they initially kept private to protect the Elvira brand.

Now, Peterson has shared that she feels happier and more secure than ever, embracing both her iconic alter ego and her authentic self.
