In her book, Liza Minnelli detailed the filming of the comedy-drama “The Lucky Lady,” where she worked alongside Gene Hackman. She was about 28 years old at the time, and he was 45. In the film, which was a commercial failure, Minnelli played a widow named Claire, caught up in Prohibition-era criminal schemes.

The actress admitted that there was no chemistry between her and Hackman. “I find it difficult to work when there’s no spark between me and my partner,” she wrote. Furthermore, according to the actress, he acted cold and distant toward her.

Hackman didn’t want to establish a friendly relationship with the actress and treated her condescendingly. “He was downright rude! It’s really hard to work without on-screen interaction,” Minnelli concluded.

Last February, the bodies of 95-year-old Gene Hackman and his 65-year-old girlfriend were discovered in their home. Police determined that the pianist died first, around February 12, of respiratory symptoms caused by a rare but deadly virus. Hackman wandered the house alone after his wife’s death. Due to his serious condition, he may not have realized his wife had died. The artist died almost a week later, on February 18.
