Thaynara Marcondes, a 22-year-old pedagogy student from Mandirituba, is recovering from breast reduction surgery after being diagnosed with gigantomastia, a disorder that caused her breasts to expand to 10 kilos (22 pounds). Before her surgery, she found it difficult to complete even simple activities. Let’s hear her narrative.
“I couldn’t even wear a bra anymore,” she says.
“I ended up packing all of my stuff in a suitcase because nothing fit. One day, I tried on eight shirts, but none of them fit. “I completely lost it.”
After her operation at the end of October, Thaynara is looking forward to returning to the gym and wearing a bikini. “I want to run, be active, and do a ton of things that I couldn’t do before,” she tells me.
From struggle to strength
The condition, which initially manifested itself in February, made ordinary tasks difficult, including working out and even handling kids at her daycare job. “I couldn’t take it anymore,” she says. “I’m skinny, and my back was killing me.”
The R$40,000 surgery has given her a new lease on life, and she is now documenting her rehabilitation story on social media to raise awareness about gigantomastia and its consequences. She is overjoyed to finally feel like herself again, and she wants other women to know they are not alone in confronting this issue.
What is gigantomastia?
Gigantomastia, also known as breast hypertrophy or macromastia, is a rare disorder in which the breasts become abnormally enormous due to an excess of breast tissue. This ailment primarily affects those who are classified as female at birth and can cause substantial discomfort, suffering, and even body image difficulties.
