Denise Nicholas, one of television’s most admired trailblazers, turned heads during a rare outing in Los Angeles on Wednesday with her elegant and youthful appearance at 81.
The screen legend, who first rose to fame in the 1960s, looked effortlessly stylish as she stepped out wearing a sleek black leather jacket paired with a bold red top and matching shoes. The polished look instantly reminded fans of her glamorous heyday, when she appeared on the cover of Jet Magazine multiple times at the height of her popularity.

Nicholas is perhaps best known to many viewers for playing Harriet DeLong on In the Heat of the Night alongside Carroll O’Connor. She also shared the screen with icons Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby in the 1977 film A Piece of the Action.

Longtime fans also remember Nicholas as one of the first Black women to headline an American television series when she starred as guidance counselor Liz McIntyre on Room 222 from 1969 to 1974. Her groundbreaking performance earned her three consecutive Golden Globe nominations and cemented her place in television history.
Born in Detroit, Nicholas first gained early attention as a teenager when she appeared on the cover of Jet at just 16 years old. She began her television career with a guest role on It Takes a Thief in 1968 before steadily becoming one of the most recognizable faces on TV in the early 1970s.

Her success continued on the big screen, where she earned two NAACP Image Awards in 1976 for her acting work, including her role in Let’s Do It Again. She later displayed her comedic side in the sitcom Baby… I’m Back!.
Away from acting, Nicholas also explored music and writing. She penned the song “Can We Pretend,” later recorded by her then-husband Bill Withers on his album +’Justments.

In later years, she expanded into screenwriting while on In the Heat of the Night, writing several episodes of the series. She then pursued formal training at the University of Southern California’s Professional Writing Program.
Nicholas launched a successful literary chapter with the release of her debut novel Freshwater Road in 2005, earning critical praise and multiple awards.
