A woman who suffers from a rare ailment that causes her to age eight times quicker than Benjamin Button has spoken out about her situation.

Tiffany Wedekind, a 47-year-old lady, earned the nickname ‘Benjamin Button’ after the 2008 film because she has had a disease that causes her to appear much older than she is.

Despite having the illness, she was diagnosed at the age of 31 with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, the disease kills most people in their teens because it ‘creates rapid aging in children’. It is caused by ‘a minor genetic abnormality’ that causes’signs of aging such as balding and wrinkled skin’.

Unfortunately, the Clinic adds that ‘the illness is invariably deadly’ and that death most typically ‘occurs as a result of a heart attack or stroke’, but it can be slowed by a certain drug.

Tiffany has lost all of her natural hair and teeth, and her heart is steadily weakening after being diagnosed with aortic stenosis, which requires an aortic valve replacement.

Despite this, she claims she has been living her life to the fullest.

Tiffany has been married, divorced, started a business, and is a yoga fanatic to maintain her health.

She stated, “Every day, I am reminded of my mortality. But I forget about half the time. I have experienced multiple incarnations in a life that was not expected of me. I know that life can end like that. You don’t need to be terrified of death.

“We are all on the same boat. I am not afraid to exhibit myself bald and toothless. “You don’t have to be afraid of death.”

She continued, “People need to recognize me for who I am at my core. It does not matter that I do not have hair. I am who I am despite the fact that I am fading away.”

Unfortunately, her brother Chad, 39, was also born with the issue, and the two only realized something was wrong when they reached adolescence.

Tiffany’s teeth deteriorated, making it difficult to eat, and her hair thinned in her twenties.

Tiffany’s growth was stunted by the condition, and she is now just 4 feet 4 inches tall.

Chad, Tiffany, and her mother discovered that they all carried the mutant gene after Chad was forced to have cardiac surgery owing to the ailment; he died three years later, in 2001, of sepsis and a heart attack.

Tiffany’s mother, Linda, 75, also died in September 2024.

She stated, “When we found out what we got, I thought ‘well, that’s crazy.'” They said, ‘You’ve made it this far; you’ve outlived your life expectancy. The way my brother died was quite terrible. I put myself out there. Life goes so quickly. That did not kick in till my brother died.”

Following the death of her brother, she chose to live for herself, ending her eight-year marriage and starting her own business.

She added that this has caused her to ‘forget’ about her health because she is ‘busy living my life’.

Tiffany stated, “I’m living my life in a good, positive position. I am a dreamer. I want people to stop focusing on the fact that we are getting older and see it as a privilege. People will moan about becoming old and having wrinkles. It is not going to matter. I’d like to focus on living my life. I am so special. I’m like a fish, continuously striving to emerge from the darkness. I’m 4 feet tall and weigh only 56 pounds, yet I’m a powerhouse.”
