When we first met Diego, he was frozen with fear—his wide eyes tracked every movement, his body tense, ready to defend himself. Though he stayed still, it was clear: Diego didn’t trust people, and who could blame him?
Whatever he endured before his rescue left deep emotional scars. While we don’t know every detail of his past, his reactions spoke volumes. Our experts noticed he was particularly anxious around new people—likely a sign of past trauma or abuse.

Born in 2016 in the Czech Republic, Diego’s life began under private ownership. He narrowly escaped being sold for trophy hunting, thanks to a dedicated animal welfare activist who rescued him and brought him to a temporary big cat facility. There, he received proper nutrition and medical care, but it was never meant to be permanent. Despite many efforts, a suitable, species-appropriate sanctuary remained out of reach—until now.

As of November 2024, Diego has found his forever home at FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary in the Netherlands, a refuge specially designed for traumatised big cats. The team there has helped dozens of rescued animals reclaim their lives with care, patience, and compassion.
Now, Diego is slowly adjusting to his new environment, closely watched by the expert staff. Soon, he’ll be released into a spacious, outdoor enclosure where he can finally feel the grass under his paws and the sun on his back—free, safe, and respected.

There’s even hope he’ll one day share his space with Manuschka, a former circus lioness, so neither will have to live in solitude.
Diego’s new life is just beginning—and we can’t wait to see him heal, thrive, and maybe even roar again.
