Just 40 minutes drive from Dumaguete City, on the island of Negros, among the greenery of the jungle and at the foot of an extinct volcano, there is a cozy house.

It was built by Dima, a Russian who once came to the Philippines in search of a new beginning. Here he found not only love, but also a calm, meaningful life.

Dima and his wife Naivi chose this place for a reason: the climate in the mountains is milder, a couple of degrees cooler than on the coast.

“We just saw this plot of land and liked it right away,” recalls Dima. Despite its impressive size – 7,175 square meters – they decided: let’s take it.

The price seemed reasonable, and the potential was huge. Agricultural land, so cheaper. Only 450 pesos per square meter. They pay in installations, about $1,500 per month – agreed directly with the owner through a lawyer.

The site is home to about a hundred coconut palms, which provide shade and fruit, and several rare trees that locals call “G.”

The area is gradually becoming habitable; a worker already lives here and helps take care of the territory.

The couple’s son, Yurchik, already freely constructs sentences in English – cartoons, friends and his mother do their job.

But Dima tries to speak to him in Russian to maintain contact with his native culture.

While the house has no electricity, solar panels come to the rescue. They are especially useful after typhoons, when interruptions are possible. There are no problems with water, but it was difficult during the drought – they learn from experience.

The gazebo, like the house, was delivered by car – inexpensive and convenient. The main house was built using frame technology: a metal skeleton, panels, a concrete toilet.

The rest of the walls are plasterboard. The house is made in traditional Filipino style, but with modern touches. A large window in the bedroom opens up to palm trees, and the cool air at night makes air conditioning unnecessary.
