Half a dozen African elephants lay on the bank of a river in Malawi… It was the beginning of a man-made migration.

1. It was a massive project to transport 500 elephants. Tranquilized, these giants are now lying on the ground.

2. Humans are taking over more land and squeezing wildlife out of Africa. This type of man-made animal migration is increasingly being seen as a conservation strategy for wildlife in Malawi, one of the continent’s most densely populated countries.

3. So, to transport an elephant to safety, you will need a helicopter, tranquilizers, trucks and cranes.

4. Loading a small elephant into a truck manually.

5. A sleeping baby elephant. During transport, all elephants have their eyes covered with their large ears, an effective protection from the bright sunlight.

7. There are 300 km of road ahead to a safer place. Where there are almost no poachers hunting for ivory.

8. A road train carrying elephants prepares to leave.
