Patricia Krentcil — widely known as “Tan Mom” — first became a viral sensation in 2012 when she was accused of child endangerment due to her extreme tanning routine. At the height of her obsession, she reportedly hit tanning salons up to five times a week. The controversy began after claims that she had brought her six-year-old daughter into a tanning booth, sparking outrage and a media frenzy. Patricia denied the allegations, saying her daughter’s sunburn came from outdoor play, and though she was arrested, a grand jury later cleared her of all charges.

Her strikingly dark complexion brought national attention to “tanorexia” — a compulsive drive to maintain an excessively bronzed look. Experts cited her case as a dangerous example, warning about risks like skin cancer, severe sun damage, and body dysmorphic disorder. Patricia herself admitted that tanning had become part of her lifestyle since her early 20s.
In the aftermath of the scandal, she became a target for parodies on TV shows and late-night comedy skits, which took a heavy toll on both her and her family. Her children were bullied, and Patricia confessed to turning to alcohol during the chaos. Seeking a new beginning, she relocated to Florida but continued to lean into the “Tan Mom” persona, considering film projects, dabbling in modeling, and even launching tanning-related products.

Her health struggles escalated in 2019 when she was hospitalized with pneumonia, sepsis, and pancreatitis, suffering cardiac arrest and being placed on life support before making a remarkable recovery.
Today, Patricia appears healthier and more grounded. While she still tans — though not as excessively — she has found balance, explaining in a 2021 interview that she now views “Tan Mom” as a public character, while Patricia Marie is her true self behind the spotlight.
