“Hearing her cry gave me something to fight for.” This moving story shows the power of love and why we should never give up on our loved ones.
In September of last year, 23-year-old Shelly Cawley was rushed into an emergency C-section after suffering from severe headaches. The surgery brought joy with the safe arrival of her daughter, Rylan—but for Shelly, it nearly ended in tragedy. A blood clot in her leg left her in a coma.

Her husband Jeremy described the heartbreak: “The idea of going from the highest of emotions of having that child born… to the next moment where you think you’re saying goodbye to your wife—I was numb.”

Family and friends tried everything to wake her, but nothing worked. Doctors even warned Jeremy that she might not survive through the night.

Then one nurse, Ashley Manus, had a bold idea. Knowing how beneficial skin-to-skin contact is for newborns, she suggested placing baby Rylan on her mother’s chest. At first, the baby snuggled in and fell asleep. But when nurses gently encouraged Rylan to cry, something remarkable happened—Shelly’s vitals spiked.

Doctors believe the sound of her newborn crying reached Shelly on a subconscious level, giving her body the will to fight. Soon after, she began to recover.

“Her crying gave me something to fight for,” Shelly recalled. “I remember looking at Rylan’s face and thinking she was the most beautiful baby in the world. It felt like we had a special connection after everything that happened.”

In time, Shelly made a full recovery and left the hospital. A year later, Rylan was thriving, and the family reflected with gratitude on the hospital staff who never gave up.

“What a difference a year makes!” Shelly wrote on Facebook. “We’re so thankful for the miracle that changed our lives for the better.”
