Weddings are full of surprises, but few couples can say their ceremony was unexpectedly “made” by their dog jumping into a fountain mid-aisle. Elizabeth and Dominic Valenzuela, both 33, tied the knot on August 8 at the picturesque Villa & Vine in Santa Barbara, California, and had hoped to include their beloved corgi, Kobe, as their ring bearer. What unfolded, however, was far more memorable than they could have ever imagined.
Kobe, a one-year-old corgi with a playful personality and endless energy, was dressed in a tiny tuxedo for the big day. Elizabeth and Dominic had envisioned him walking down the aisle calmly, carrying the rings with pride and elegance. They even practiced the routine once under the supervision of their pet handler, Alondra Veliz, from the wedding pet service The Wedding Leash. However, the rehearsal could hardly prepare them for Kobe’s exuberance and his undeniable love of water.

As the ceremony began, Kobe dutifully circled the fountain that sat at the center of the aisle. Guests watched eagerly, anticipating the moment when the tiny pup would deliver the rings to their soon-to-be-married humans. But as Kobe approached Elizabeth and Dominic with the rings in tow, he caught sight of the cool, splashing water. With a burst of energy, he leaped straight into the fountain, splashing water everywhere and immediately stealing the spotlight.
“Guests seemed to think it was hilarious, and we’re all still talking about it months after the wedding,” Elizabeth told PEOPLE. Indeed, the 95 guests in attendance erupted into laughter at the unexpected scene, cheering as Kobe waded through the water, his tail wagging nonstop and his little paws kicking up ripples in every direction. The corgi’s playful antics turned what might have been a formal and predictable moment into an unforgettable highlight of the day.

The entire episode was captured on video by The Wedding Leash, which posted the clip on Instagram on October 2. The post quickly went viral, with the on-screen text jokingly declaring, “Wedding fail? Our ring bearer Kobe the corgi decided to go for a swim in the middle of the wedding.” Handlers Alondra Veliz and Lou Gomez added in the caption: “He made everyone’s day with his utter cuteness 🐕 🐾.” In the footage, Kobe’s tuxedo-clad figure can be seen trotting toward the fountain, briefly delivering the rings, and then—unable to resist temptation—hopping in with uncontainable joy.
Despite the chaos, the handlers maintained composure and ensured Kobe’s safety. “Everyone seemed to enjoy it, and it certainly was a highlight for the couple,” Gomez said. He was responsible for guiding Kobe through the ceremony, assisting with pre-wedding photo sessions, and safely transporting the pup afterward. He quickly scooped Kobe out of the fountain and gently waved his paw goodbye, a moment captured in photos and remembered fondly by all who witnessed it.

Gomez admitted he initially worried that the fountain incident would ruin the ceremony. “As the wedding pet handler, my biggest concern was Kobe and making sure I did not ruin the wedding!” he explained. “I profusely apologized to the couple because I wasn’t fast enough to intervene. To my surprise, everyone was congratulating Kobe and me for such an amazing performance. The couple said, ‘It was the best part of the ceremony.’”
Elizabeth recalls her own reaction to Kobe’s splash. “I was shocked for a split second, and then I remembered Kobe is unapologetically himself, as my husband always says. He’s a little guy with a huge personality,” she said. “I was fine with it. I knew we were going to get some great pictures out of it! There’s no one I’d rather steal my spotlight.” Dominic agreed, adding, “I thought it was amazing and the most on-brand thing he could do. Kobe’s the king of letting his intrusive thoughts win, and I’m so glad everyone could see it on full display. It made our special moment even more memorable.”

The couple believes Kobe’s leap was inspired by his love for water. Dominic explained, “He even has his own floaty at our pool at home!” Elizabeth added, “I’m sure it felt amazing on a warm summer day by the beach.” It was clear that Kobe’s instincts and playful nature had taken over, creating a scene that was spontaneous, joyful, and utterly adorable.
While the pup had only practiced his duties once before the big day, the mishap did not deter Elizabeth and Dominic from including him in the celebration. In fact, it reinforced their main goal: to have a wedding that reflected their personalities and their shared sense of fun. “Despite not everything going according to plan, Kobe’s fun personality and cute mishap helped us achieve our main goal — to have a fun wedding that reflected each of us,” Elizabeth said.
Gomez encourages other couples to consider including their pets in their ceremonies. “We’ve handled hundreds of pets at weddings, and we do many off-leash runs down the aisle. I always tell clients when they ask me, ‘How successful are dogs running down the aisle?’ Even if it’s not perfect, it will still be perfect,” he said. “Everyone loves a dog running down the aisle, but they think it’s the cutest thing when they deviate from the plan!”

Kobe’s story has resonated with dog-lovers and wedding enthusiasts alike. Since his viral moment, the couple has continued to cherish the memory, sharing clips and photos with friends, family, and social media followers. The video has become a symbol of how unexpected moments can transform an event into something truly unforgettable.
The story of Kobe also includes a charming origin tale. Elizabeth and Dominic adopted him in December 2024, four months after he was born on August 24, 2024. The couple chose the name Kobe in honor of the late basketball legend Kobe Bryant, whose birthday coincidentally matched their pup’s. Elizabeth recalled, “Funny enough, a couple months after moving in, we saw a sign near our neighborhood about corgi puppies for sale. Dominic has always wanted a corgi and had been trying to convince me for years. At that point, it just felt like a literal sign.”
Dominic added, “We got really lucky we saw the sign and contacted them when we did. There was heavy wind the next day that blew the sign away—if I hadn’t reached out the day prior, we would have never got Kobe.” Their connection with Kobe, forged through both fate and timing, made him the perfect addition to their wedding.

Looking back, the couple agrees that the fountain incident became a highlight rather than a disruption. Elizabeth noted, “There’s no one I’d rather steal my spotlight,” while Dominic joked about Kobe letting his “intrusive thoughts” guide the day. In the end, the playful corgi’s antics embodied the couple’s vision of a joyful, memorable, and personalized wedding.
From start to finish, Kobe’s splash created laughter, joy, and a story that will be retold for years to come. For Elizabeth and Dominic, it was a reminder that the best moments often come unplanned and that sometimes, the star of the show might just be a tiny, tuxedo-wearing pup with a love for water. Their wedding day will forever be remembered not only for the vows exchanged but also for the unforgettable moment when their ring bearer decided a fountain was simply too tempting to resist.
