Following the discovery of a child’s body in a forest near Güstrow, around 700 people gathered for a memorial service for eight-year-old Fabian at St. Mary’s Church. Fabian had been reported missing on Friday. The hope of finding the boy alive has, sadly, not been realized. On Tuesday morning, a child’s body was found in a forest approximately 15 kilometers southwest of the city. According to police and the public prosecutor’s office, it is believed to be Fabian. A forensic examination will provide final confirmation of the child’s identity and clarify the cause of death.
Current investigations suggest that foul play may be involved, police and prosecutors stated. “We are still at the very beginning,” said Harald Nowack, spokesperson for the Rostock public prosecutor’s office. It has not yet been determined when the autopsy will take place. Both the mother and the separated father were informed of the discovery, according to authorities.
In the evening, approximately 700 people reportedly attended a memorial service in the Mecklenburg town. Many placed candles and plush toys in front of the overcrowded St. Mary’s Church as a gesture of sympathy and mourning.
“Finding Support in Community”
The gathering had originally been intended as a prayer for the safe return of the missing eight-year-old. “Now it became a place where people could come together with their shock, despair, and grief, and find support in the community,” said Christiane Hinrichs, a parish educator and one of the organizers.
Fabian had disappeared on Friday and was reported missing by his mother that evening. In the following days, hundreds of emergency personnel searched for the child — combing forests, abandoned buildings, an industrial area, and even a lake. On Monday alone, around 200 officers were deployed. Neighbors were questioned, and police also investigated at Fabian’s primary school.
On Monday evening, cadaver dogs indicated a possible location at Inselsee on the outskirts of Güstrow, but divers found nothing there on Tuesday. Meanwhile, authorities continued searching the surrounding areas. Eventually, a female walker reported to police that she had discovered the child’s body in a forest near Klein Upahl. The father, who is separated from the mother, lives not far from this location.
It had initially been assumed that the boy was intending to visit his father on the day he disappeared. According to police, tracking dogs followed his trail to the Güstrow bus station. Near a bus stop close to Zehna, where the father lives, the dog picked up the scent again, which later led into the nearby forest, where the trail was eventually lost. Investigations by the criminal police are ongoing.
