A police dog pulled a black bag out of the river and barked loudly. When a police officer opened the bag, he was frozen with horror when he saw what was inside.

While patrolling the highway that ran alongside the river, everything seemed normal: the occasional car, a few people walking by, and the steady hum of an engine.

The policewoman was sitting behind the wheel of the car, adjusting the radio and glancing at the carrier with straps standing nearby. Rex was usually dozing, but at that moment, when nothing foreshadowed trouble, he suddenly perked up and, as if he heard an invisible call, jumped up at once, jumped out the open window and, as soon as he was outside, darted towards the river, ignoring the officer’s commands.

The policewoman instinctively grabbed her belt, jumped out of the car and ran after him, because she couldn’t let her partner act alone, and because she sensed something strange in Rex’s behavior.

The shore was slippery, but this did not stop the dog: he threw himself into the water without hesitation, swimming collectedly and purposefully, just as he was used to saving people from all sorts of troubles.

A few seconds later, Rex grabbed a black plastic bag in his teeth, which was slowly floundering on the surface and was almost sinking, and, straining with all his strength, began to drag it to the shore.

The policewoman, trying not to slip, helped pull out the bag, holding the dog by the collar, while feeling her heart pounding with anxiety and anticipation.

When the package was in their hands, Rex barked frantically, not allowing the policewoman to guess what the contents were, as if demanding that the person quickly unravel the mystery – his barking was more like a cry for help.

The policewoman, her hands shaking with excitement, tore the cellophane and was horrified by what she saw.

Inside lay a tiny, wet newborn baby, crying hoarsely.

Rex, as if understanding the significance of every moment, carefully licked the baby’s cheek, calming him down, and the policewoman, without wasting a second, took off her jacket from her shoulders, wrapped it around the child, hiding him from the wind and cold, after which, on the go, she called an ambulance and informed the dispatcher that the baby had been found.

Paramedics arrived quickly, wrapped the child in warm blankets, and took him to the nearest hospital, where doctors confirmed that, despite hypothermia and shock, the baby was still in stable condition.

While doctors attended to the child, police began interviewing witnesses and checking cameras along the highway. A few hours later, it became clear that an unknown woman, heavily dressed and wearing a hood, had stood near the bridge that morning, looking confused for a moment, and then headed toward the river.

The investigation revealed that the young mother, desperate and fearful for her future, decided in one tragic moment to commit a terrible act, hoping that the river would hide her guilt.

This woman’s motives remained humanly understandable and bitter – poverty, fear of condemnation and lack of support – but her actions were not without consequences.

The woman was detained and given psychological assistance, and the case was subsequently referred to social services and the court, where all the circumstances were considered.
