In Lucerne, Switzerland, one of the country’s oldest churches has introduced a groundbreaking — and controversial — installation inside its confession booth: an artificial-intelligence system known as “Digital Jesus.”
The project, officially titled Deus in Machina, was developed in collaboration with researchers from local universities who aim to explore how modern technology can shape spiritual experiences. The installation allows visitors to ask questions in over 100 languages, receiving responses generated in real time from a blend of theological writings, historical religious texts, and advanced AI algorithms.
Since its launch, more than a thousand people have stepped into the booth to interact with the system. Many describe the experience as surprisingly intimate, even moving. Several visitors reported feeling a sense of calm or reflection comparable to speaking with a real spiritual advisor. Others, however, found the answers overly generic or overly cautious, suggesting that while AI can mimic guidance, it cannot yet replicate true pastoral depth.

Church officials emphasize that Deus in Machina is not meant to replace priests or traditional confession but to spark dialogue about the future of faith in an increasingly digital world. They say the installation offers a modern entry point for younger generations, travelers, and those hesitant to seek human confession.
Still, the project has ignited a wider conversation across Switzerland. Supporters see it as a bold, innovative step toward making spiritual reflection more accessible. Critics argue that placing AI inside a sacred space risks trivializing religious traditions and could blur boundaries between authentic guidance and machine-generated text.
Despite the controversy, the Lucerne church plans to continue the experiment throughout the year while collecting data on user reactions. As technology evolves, Deus in Machina raises profound questions: Can a machine offer comfort? Can faith be mediated through algorithms? And what place will AI hold in the future of spirituality?
