She spent 500 days alone in a cave for a human experiment — but never finished her book

A Spanish extreme athlete has resurfaced after spending an astonishing 500 days living completely alone deep underground as part of an unprecedented scientific experiment designed to explore the limits of the human mind.

Beatriz Flamini, now 50, emerged on Friday from a cave located 70 meters (230 feet) beneath the surface near Granada, Spain. Wearing dark glasses to protect her eyes from the sudden brightness and smiling calmly as she adjusted to the outside world, the elite mountaineer appeared remarkably composed after more than a year in total isolation.

Flamini told reporters that time seemed to move very differently underground. Without natural light, clocks, or human interaction, the days blurred together so completely that she lost track of how long she had been inside. In fact, she said the experience passed so quickly that she was reluctant to leave at all.

“When they came to get me, I was sleeping,” Flamini explained. “I thought something bad had happened. I said, ‘Already? That can’t be right.’ I honestly didn’t believe it was time to come out yet. I hadn’t even finished my book.”

Her support team said Flamini set a new world record for the longest time voluntarily spent in a cave, as scientists monitored the effects of extreme isolation on the human brain, circadian rhythms, and perception of time.

Flamini entered the cave in November 2021 at age 48, celebrating two birthdays alone below ground. During that time, major global events unfolded — including the war in Ukraine and the end of Spain’s COVID mask mandate — without her knowledge.

She spent her days exercising, painting, drawing, knitting, and reading, completing around 60 books and consuming roughly 1,000 liters of water. After day 65, she stopped tracking time altogether, losing any sense of days or months passing.

Despite challenges like insect infestations, she described the experience as deeply fulfilling. “I never wanted to leave,” she said. “I got along very well with myself.”

Throughout the experiment, Flamini had no direct contact with anyone, even in emergencies. Now back above ground, she plans medical evaluations before embarking on her next adventure.
