Lauren Chapin, best known for her role on the classic TV series Father Knows Best and for appearing in the 1954 film A Star Is Born alongside Judy Garland, has passed away at the age of 80.

The news was shared by her son on social media Tuesday evening: “After a long, hard-fought battle over the past five years, the time has come. My mother Lauren Chapin passed away from her battle with cancer tonight.”

Born in Los Angeles on May 23, 1945, Chapin grew up surrounded by show business — her older brothers, Billy Chapin (The Night of the Hunter) and Michael Chapin (It’s a Wonderful Life), were also child actors.

Chapin’s first major role came at the age of nine when she starred opposite Judy Garland in A Star Is Born. Shortly afterward, she appeared on CBS’s Lux Video Theatre before landing the part that would define her career: Kathy “Kitten” Anderson, the youngest and most precocious child on Father Knows Best. She played the role from 1954 to 1960, acting alongside Robert Young, Elinor Donahue, Billy Gray, and Jane Wyatt.

Despite her on-screen success, Chapin endured a difficult and painful personal life. She spoke openly about her abusive upbringing, revealing that her mother struggled with alcoholism and that her father sexually abused her at a young age. By age 11, she said she had developed what she described as a manic depressive personality, and she even attempted suicide. Reflecting on the stark contrast between her character Kathy Anderson, who was beloved and protected, and her own experiences, Chapin told Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee in 1989: “I didn’t understand how God could let me suffer.”

Her early adult life was equally turbulent. Chapin married at 16 and divorced at 18; one of her marriages was annulled when she discovered her husband was still legally married to someone else. She later revealed that another romantic relationship forced her into prostitution and introduced her to heroin, which she struggled with for seven years until she became sober at age 25 in 1970.

After overcoming her personal challenges, Chapin rebuilt her life and career, turning her experience toward helping others. She became a talent manager and is credited with helping launch the career of Jennifer Love Hewitt (Party of Five).

Lauren Chapin’s life story was one of extraordinary early success shadowed by personal hardship, yet ultimately marked by resilience and a dedication to helping the next generation of performers. Her passing at 80 closes a remarkable chapter in Hollywood history.
