Eric Per Sullivan, who played Dewey on “Malcolm in the Middle,” has grown up

“Malcolm in the Middle” was a show that brought endless laughter to millions and still holds a special place in viewers’ hearts. Premiering over 21 years ago, the series ran for 151 episodes, each watched by an average of 15 million people — a testament to its timeless humor and charm.

The show followed 14-year-old Malcolm, the third of four boys in a chaotic family. With an IQ of 165, Malcolm was exceptionally intelligent, but his brilliance often left him misunderstood by his quirky household.

Creator Linwood Boomer drew inspiration from his own life, telling the Los Angeles Times, “I was in the middle… we were rotten kids. After my mom saw the pilot, her main comment was, ‘I’m not going to tell you your IQ, but it sure wasn’t 165.’”

Initially, Fox executives were hesitant about the concept, but then-president Doug Herzog saw its potential. He invested heavily in promotion, confident that the show would stand out from anything else on air — and he was right.

The series catapulted many of its cast members into the spotlight. Frankie Muniz became synonymous with Malcolm, Bryan Cranston became a household name as Hal, Christopher Masterson portrayed the mischievous eldest brother Francis, Jane Kaczmarek won praise as the strict but loving Lois, and Eric Per Sullivan stole hearts as the adorable Dewey.

“Malcolm in the Middle” earned seven Golden Globe nominations and 33 Emmy nods, winning seven Emmys in total.

While some cast members continued acting, Eric Per Sullivan, who was just nine years old when the show began, eventually stepped back from the industry. Known for his charming and often scene-stealing performances, Eric appeared in all episodes, bringing Dewey’s mix of innocence and mischief to life. After the series, he appeared in films such as Unfaithful (2002) and Christmas with the Kranks, and lent his voice to Finding Nemo and Arthur and the Invisibles. Since then, he has largely remained out of the public eye.

Eric attended Mount Saint Charles Academy in Rhode Island before transferring to Phillips Exeter Academy. He later enrolled at the University of Southern California (USC) from 2009 to 2010.

Looking at recent photos of him, it’s clear that Dewey has grown into a young adult who looks very different from his on-screen persona, though he hasn’t lost the charm that endeared him to fans.

Eric developed close friendships with his fellow cast members during filming, and many fans continue to hope that one day the iconic cast might reunite for a sequel or special project.
