Uncle Mateo was a battle-hardened combat veteran, the toughest guy around. After two tours, he came home with Rex, a sleek black German Shepherd who likely saved his life more times than anyone could count. They were inseparable. Rex even stayed by his side after service, continuing search and rescue work for five more years. When Uncle Mateo passed from a heart condition, we all knew Rex would grieve deeply. The ceremony was solemn and respectful—military honors, the flag ceremony, the whole thing. I was standing next to my mom, gripping her hand so tightly I probably left marks. As they wheeled the casket into place, someone let Rex out of his crate. At first, he wandered over, sniffing around, almost like he was confused about where Mateo was.
Then, without warning, he jumped. No growl, no bark—just a soft, heartbreaking whimper as he lay across the casket, his head resting by the folded flag. The room went completely still.
